In celebration of Black History Month, Brixton Rush Common & St Martin's Labour Party are delighted to welcome Dr Jak Beula, founder and Director of the Nubian Jak Community Trust (NJCT). Established in 2006, NJCT is the only commemorative plaque and sculpture scheme focused on memorialising the historic contributions of Black and minority ethnic people in Britain. To date, the charity has installed more than 100 commemorative blue and black plaques and since 2017, it has organised a Remembrance Day for veterans after installing the African and Caribbean War Memorial in Windrush Square. Known locally as the Brixton Cenotaph, the memorial was the UK's first tribute to every regiment from Africa and the Caribbean that served alongside British and Commonwealth Forces in the two World Wars. Come and hear the inspirational Dr Beula talk about why he established the Trust and it's groundbreaking initiative to document the Black presence in Britain. Learn more about Trust's fantastic achievements, its impact and future goals. We hope that you will show your support for an incredible local charity that is raising awareness and impacting Black history and heritage internationally. The meeting will start at 7.30pm and light snacks will be available from 7.15pm. Drinks will also be available to purchase from the bar in our meeting room. The venue is the Effra Social, 89 Effra Road, London SW2 1DF. Attendance is FREE but registration is essential. Places at this event are limited so if you would like to attend, please register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
